David Coy is a poet and a long-time teacher at Arizona Western College(20 years) where he directed the Creative Writing program (17 years) andedited the student literary magazine, Colorado Crossing. He has an MFAdegree in creative writing, poetry from the University of Arkansas(1983) and a BA in English Literature from the University of Wyoming(1974). While at the U of A, he won two INTRO awards, in consecutiveyears, given to students of writing programs whose work is considered tobe best in the nation. He is the author of two books of poems, RuralNews (Mother of Ashes Press 1990) and Lean Creatures (COTH Press 1994).His poems have appeared in Magma, Poetry in Performance, Antioch Review,Widener Review, Slant, Sow's Ear Quarterly, CNR, The Black Bear Review,Moon City Review, and many other places. One of his poems "Drinking theWine List" is a response to the poem "Workshop" by former Poet Laureate,Billy Collins. He was the recipient of an Academy of American Poetsaward in 1983 and the winner of a head to head haiku contest at theAshville Poetry Festival in 1997. In the 1994 Associated WritingPrograms meeting in Tempe, he performed in a showcase of Arizona poets(a very select group). He has given poetry readings in Michigan,Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Arizona and Mexico.
