Erika Vazquez-Aguilar

Nacida en San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora en Agosto de 1972. me trajeron a los Estados Unidos a la edad de once años, illegal y sin saber una palabra en Ingles. Eventualmente aprendi el idioma, me hice residente permanente y despues ciudadana de estos los United States. Por cosas del destino, no descubri la literatura ni la belleza de las palabras hasta que senti necesidad de escribir (o como me diria un dia el Maestro Ruben Meneses, echar vomito emocional en un papel) a la edad de diesiseis o diesisiete años. Mis primeros pininos poeticos fueron en Ingles, y no fue asta varios años despues que descubri que escribir en Español sabia tambien sabroso. Soy amante de las palabras, de mi esposo, y adoradora de mis hijos. Mi poesia refleja una mezcla de experiencias, historia, protesta, y formas de ver el mundo en los zapatos propios y ajenos.

Born in San Luis, Rio Colorado, Sonora in August 1972. I was brought to the United States on a visitor's visa at age eleven, with no concept of the English language. Eventually, I learned the language, became a permanent resident, and then a naturalized citizen of these the Unites States. By destiny, I didn't discover literature and the beauty of words until I felt the need to write (or as Professor Ruben Meneses would one day say, I felt the need to throw emotional vomit on a piece of paper) at the age of sixteen or seventeen. My first poetic attempts were written in English, and it was not until many years later that I discovered writing in Spanish also felt delightful. I am a lover of words, my husband, and my children's keeper. My poetry reflects a mixture of experiences, history, protest, and the many forms one can see the world through one's own eyes and the eyes of others.
